September 20, 2010

I have a new found respect for insomniacs. I have really had trouble the past few weeks with sleeping, but last night was the worst! I went to bed at 9:20 feeling like I had the flu. Fell asleep around 10 and woke up at 12. DID NOT go back to sleep the rest of the night. Not for 5 minutes. I had to get up at 6 too, the first day of the earliest shift I've worked. Go figure. I was literally sick at work today b/c I was so tired. I walked into Starbucks almost in tears and told them I needed whatever would keep me awake. I went back at lunch lol If it weren't for that coffee I don't think I would have made it through the day. I was training to be auditor so I got to sit down. Thank goodness b/c I probably would've fallen, had I been standing up!
So what's new in the city? As I think most of you saw, certain boroughs in the city were hit by a storm, possibly a tornado. I don't know if they ever ruled that it was a tornado or not. I come and bring the weather! I was at work and Daffy's is actually located in the basement of a big tall building. So had the tornado been in Manhattan, we would have been fine. It hit in Queens and Brooklyn and I didn't even know about it until my Mom text me asking if I was ok. Someone mentioned the word tornado at work and everyone blew it off and laughed. It's really sad b/c someone was killed and many homes and cars were damaged. BUT, as a home grown Arkansan, I had to laugh a little. ESPECIALLY, if you go to weather.com and watch one of the mobile videos. It's these 2 guys saying "dude, omg, we're in a tornado" over and over and over. It's kind of like if a New Yorker were to be in central AR when it snowed. lol
I went and watched Devil yesterday. It was a pretty good movie. I hadn't been to the movies in so long, and yes I was alone, but I walked in and smelled the popcorn and got really excited. I thought, this is going to be relaxing! It was! Now, it's been a while since I was at the movies back home but it was almost comical b/c of all the stuff they have at concession. Now I know AR has some of this stuff but they have hot tea, coffee, cheese sticks, chicken strips, fries. And you get your own butter by pressing this cool little button. Yes, I'm easily amused. My ticket was $12.50!! Anyhoo, on my way I was walking down the street I looked into the traffic and this guy was skateboarding between the traffic. I've seen rollerblades, bikes, but not skateboarding in 4 lane traffic. Oh, and a man in my neighborhood literally has 2 big speakers attached to his bicycle and rides around jamming. I'm talking bass!
Apparently there's something going on at the U.N. You probably all know more about it than I do. I don't ever watch the news. There are cops all over Midtown and I'm sure Downtown too. It's kind of chaotic around work. Thursday the President of Iran will be here....pray for me :)
Has anyone ever had a Belgian waffle with the works? I had one yesterday and oh my gosh!! Let me tell you about GOOD!!! I desperately needed a glass of milk with it. Oh man, it was amazing. A waffle with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, nuts, chocolate, some special sauce that's amazing and whipped cream. You can choose your own toppings but those were mine. Did anyone know that they now have designer shoes at Payless? They're super cute too, but $45. Defeats the purpose of shopping there in my opinion.
Apparently there are some stabbings going on on the subways :( It hasn't happened on the train I usually take but it's probably only a matter of time. The guy hasn't been caught yet. It's a black man stabbing women, in broad daylight, for their wallets. GRRRREAT!!! Again, pray for me :)
Well guys, I guess that's all for now. I'm going to try and wind down for the evening b/c I really need to get some sleep. Even a few hours will beat last night!! Take care and GO HOGS!!!! :)

Sheray

September 16, 2010

I know it's been a while. Sorry. We'll start with last Saturday when Sara and I went out. We went to a place called Mother Burger. It was in a courtyard with a few other restaurants. It had an outside area and a pretty small inside area with a bar. We sat inside. The music was loud and college football was on :) The prices were amazing! Better than Arkansas and the food was really good too! Sara paid for everything. I said, "Sara, no." She just smiled, put her hands together and said "Welcome to New York" I was like Awwww!! I have a great new friend :) It's been a pretty uneventful week though. I haven't felt real well this week. Just constantly run down. Not sleeping well at night.
Got on the train this morning and it was just like a scene from a movie. An elderly man in a hoopty wheel chair was smack in the middle playing the harmonica and singing in Spanish. It was HILARIOUS! He was pretty good at the harmonica. Too bad I didn't know what he was saying. He just went on and on, the whole time I was on there! Remember the scene on PeeWee's Big Adventures with the crazy homeless guy playing the harmonica on the train? That's what it reminds me of! lol
I'm off tomorrow! I'm excited! Not that I have much to do except laundry and go to the bank. I'll find somewhere to explore. Maybe something interesting will happen for me to blog about! Until then, have a good weekend everyone.

Fashion's Night Out

Hello all! Decided to tell you about my night working NYC Fashion's Night Out! It's a really big deal apparently. Daffy's is a discount store so we didn't have as much hooplah as stores like Bloomingdales, who had the celebs from America's Next Top Model and Project Runway. But a lot of stores had celebrities. Jennifer Lopez was out somewhere. A lot of stores hired DJ's. We closed earlier than expected so some stores were still open when I left. It was about 10:30 and you could just hear music blasting down the street. It was pretty cool! At Daffy's tho, we handed out fortune cookies that said "Save a Fortune" Cheesy huh? Well someone had to go up in the lobby and hand these cookies out. Guess who got that  job? Me. I ended up loving it though!!! It was a great change of pace from bagging up clothes all night. I couldn't tell you how many times I said "Welcome to Daffy's! Have a fortune cookie" and I said it with a LOT of energy. Let me tell you...that's exhausting. Throughout the night I met some interesting people. First of all, the corporate people came in in their suits and so I had to carry on a convo with them and while we're talking this wench comes up and whispers RIGHT in my ear "the fortune cookies are stale and don't have any discounts in them" I looked at the big wigs who did nothing and she just kept blabbing and said "shouldn't there at least be a discount" I just looked at her and said "THEY'RE FREE" Are you kidding me? Complaining about free stuff? People amaze me. And maybe she's never had a fortune cookie, but they're SUPPOSED to be hard. The regional manager came in later and I told her about the lady. So she told me to open one up and try it to make sure. They were actually VERY good :) We had boxes left over so all the employees who closed went home with bags full lol anyone want a fortune cookie? An older couple came in and the lady asked if the fortunes were X rated ha! Then a woman prob in her 70s came in all dolled up. (Most people were VERY dressed up for this event) She just kept rambling about how every store was either giving away fortune cookies or champagne. But between every sentence she would say "oh my gosh I'm so drunk" LOL she didn't really need to tell me tho b/c i could smell her. Her lips were blue too.... Then there was another lady who came in and she was a little odd but friendly and talkative. She said it was busier on 5th avenue than on black friday. idk about that. She kept insisting that I try this caramel popcorn that she got for free at Barney's. I just kept saying no and finally she said "it's b/c i'm a stranger isn't it" I told her yes. So she leaves and 5 min later she comes back with a brand new bag that hadn't been opened just for me :) I thought that was so nice of her. And she was right. That stuff was good!! Some firefighters stopped outside in their truck. They had their lights on but were just sitting there. I, of course, had to run out to the streets and give them a fortune cookie ;) Anyhoo, it was a fun night for me. Back to normalcy on Sunday. I'm off tomorrow. It's 9/11. I'm wondering if it will be weird in the city. I'm supposed to go out tomorrow night. Is that appropriate? I guess people will be out just like any other saturday night. We'll see. Have a great weekend! Talk to you later!

September 8, 2010

Hope you all had a Happy Hump Day! Haven't talked to you guys in a while so this one might be a little long. I was off today so I thought I'd venture down to the Seaport for the afternoon. A nice relaxing day with a diet coke or coffee and the sunshine....ended up walking an entire circle and seeing more of the NYC Housing Authority than anyone could wish to. Next time I'll take a map!
So last week I went to pay rent and I had to get off the subway at Grand Central Station. It's like a maze trying to get out of there! I didn't get lost but I was half way guessing with every turn I made! Then, my landlord's office is located at One Grand Central. How fancy is that? This building is top notch too. You have to show your i.d. and get a pass to even get on an elevator. I'd never seen anything like the thing I had to walk through to get upstairs. It was like a little robot with arms that go up and down. The green lights would start flashing by and the arms would go down and you got to go in. It was amusing.
Apparently, when a man around here thinks a woman is attractive they say "bless you" or "God bless you" I just want to say, I DIDN'T SNEEZE! One man today said "God bless you" and I kept walking and he said "i ain't mad at you" I was thinking, "well, you certainly have no reason to be" Oh, the man at the Deli (you know, the one who calls me honey) gave me free toilet paper and paper towels b/c the credit card machine wasn't working and it was all I had! Score! lol I paid him back tho. I had to rub it in Jerad's face b/c they wouldn't even give him change for a dollar the other day, and I got free toiletries :)
I'd also like to make it known that I have perfected the art of grilled cheese making. I'm pretty happy about this.
Saturday night I'd had enough of staying in the apartment with nothing to do and since Jerad wasn't cooperating, I went out by myself. I only went to TGIFridays. BUT I ordered 2 sangrias and nachos. So I'm three nachos in and I noticed a hair, that most definitely didn't come from me, sitting in the lettuce. So I call the guy over and he comes back and says that everything is free. I said "no, i'll pay for the drinks b/c they're great" I had no cash so I had to be charged for something so I could leave a tip. I got ready to go and asked for my tab and he said "no it's nothing" I literally had to beg. He must have thought I was crazy. He said he was going to buy one of my drinks anyway :) He said "what you want me to charge you for? a soda?" lol he ended up charging me for one drink, and i left my tip. he said he'd get me one next time I go so I'm gonna hold him to that!
Now for the big story!! When I got home from TGIFridays I came to my room and a minute later, Jerad knocked on my door. He said "hey, I think somethings going on outside my window" His window faces the street. Low and behold the biggest arrest I've seen in my life is going down. It was sooo cool with all the NYPD down there! I felt like I was watching tv! I counted 11 guys arrested. They were all young, teens to 20s and nicely dressed boys. Lined down in a row across the street. They were surrounded by police who were just standing there. Eventually an NYPD van pulled up and carried them off. I counted at least 9 police cars. A few were undercover including an undercover Taxi. Cool huh?! Be careful what you say in a taxi! There were also at least 17 cops. I was like man, that's as many cops and cop cars as we have in Beebe! I took pics lol I am such an out of towner! I also took a video that I'm going to try and post on facebook if it will let me.
I went out walking around last Saturday when I was off. I've never considered myself to be one for architecture, but the buildings in this city are just BEAUTIFUL!! There's so much detail in the sculptures and engravings on the buildings. And the pictures just do NOT do them justice. This is a place you have to visit to truly appreciate. I just stand at stare at them sometimes. It makes me wonder how long it took to perfect some of them. I passed an old church the other day. You could look at the stones and tell it was super old. I wondered just how long it'd been there.
Found out today that Ronnie and Randi Porter are coming to visit in October. They will be here the day after my birthday!! I am SO excited about their visit! Plus I'll have someone to celebrate my 25th birthday with in the big city!!!
This week is Fashion Week in NYC and Friday is the actual Fashion Night where a bunch of stores are open late. Daffy's is one of those stores. A lot of people are complaining about having to work late, but I'm actually a little excited to be a part of NYC Fashion Night! Kinda cool, right?
Hope you guys have a good night! I'll talk to you soon!

I DO have a knot on my head!!!!

That's all

September 2, 2010

Hey guys!! Let's see, I felt much better at work today!! Guess what I did? I bent down to unlock a cash drawer and hit my head on the corner of the paneling. I mean I knocked the CRAP outta my head. We filed an accident report...you never know. I checked for blood lol No blood, no knot. Just messed up my hair, gave me a headache and I got really tired afterwards.
The U.S. Open is in New York and Jerad went and watched it last night. I thought that was pretty cool. He saw Andy Roddick (sp?) play.
Has anyone been watching the Hurricane Earl path? Looks like I may be experiencing my first hurricane. I'm scared but a little excited. The area I live in was under a "Tropical Storm Watch" last I checked. I haven't looked tonight though and it's supposed to move in tomorrow!! Looks like I'll be staying in on my day off.
Oh my goodness! You guys should have seen the CRAZY man that came in Daffy's yesterday! I've never seen anything like it! This older man, prob late 60's, comes in and starts yelling at the absolute top of his lungs about how Daffy's puts "false sizes" on their merchandise. He said something about getting his lawyer. Let me tell you, his voice carried too. Everyone in the store was watching. It's a huge store and people on the other side were just standing there. I think people were scared. And he was cussing like crazy, in front of a kid too. So his wife walks over to him, she's mortified, and he rares back to hit her!!!! Yes, I kid you not!!!! I felt so bad for her. You know he treats her like crap. Anyway, they finally got him settled down and out of the store. Even the "security" guys were standing around with wide eyes. They didn't know what to do. I don't know why nobody called the police. I mean, who gets that worked up over clothing?
Like I already said, I'm off tomorrow. I'm def going to sleep in! I have to go pay rent and if the weather isn't too bad I'll do some laundry. Probably just stay in the rest of the day if it's rainy. Hope you all have a good holiday weekend. I'll be working Monday, but the store closes early!!
Love,
Sheray
